If you’re thinking about trying EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), we’re here to help you every step of the way. Getting started is simple—just reach out to us via our ‘Contact Us’ page, or you can book a free 15-minute consultation with one of our therapists. This initial conversation will give you the chance to get to know us a bit more and ask any questions you might have about the process.
- Pre-Assessment
Before your first full session, we’ll send you a couple of helpful questionnaires. These are designed to give us a sense of where you’re currently at emotionally and to get a little background information, so we can tailor the therapy to suit your needs. One of the questionnaires will focus on pre-therapy measures, giving us a clear idea of what you’re hoping to work on in therapy.
- First Assessment Session
Your first full appointment will be an assessment session, lasting around 50-60 minutes. During this session, we’ll chat about your experiences and concerns. It’s a great opportunity for you to share your challenges, and for us to discuss how EMDR therapy might be helpful for you. Together, we’ll create a personalized therapy plan that aligns with your goals and the areas you want to focus on. Our therapist will ensure that the approach feels comfortable and manageable for you, and we’ll take things at your pace.
- Therapy Sessions
EMDR therapy sessions usually last between 50-60 minutes and generally take place on a weekly basis. However, we know life can be unpredictable, so you don’t have to feel locked into weekly appointments if that doesn’t work for you. If you have time off work, or if you’d like to work through specific trauma-related issues, you can book multiple sessions in one week (subject to availability).
The number of EMDR sessions you might need varies from person to person, but on average, most people have between 8-12 sessions. We’ll regularly check in to see how things are going and discuss any adjustments you may need as you go through the therapy process. The number of sessions can always be flexible, and you can talk about your progress and goals with your therapist throughout the process to ensure it’s the right fit for you.
- Online Therapy Requirements
All you need is a device that can handle video calls—ideally a laptop or computer—and a stable internet connection. You’ll also want to make sure you’re in a private, quiet space where you feel comfortable to talk openly and without interruption.
A few things to keep in mind for your session:
- You might want something nearby to take notes, but it’s totally optional.
- It’s helpful to check your video and audio settings before the session begins to ensure everything is working smoothly.
- If you have headphones, they can improve the sound quality, but they’re not a necessity.
- Your therapist will send you a link to your session, and you can just click on it when it’s time to start—easy peasy!
We’re here to make the process as seamless as possible. If you’re ever unsure about anything or have any tech concerns before your session, just ask. We’re more than happy to provide guidance and support so you can feel comfortable and confident.
